As with most technology, e-commerce comes with many options. There are many different ways for small businesses to sell products online. These options can vary a bit depending on the size of your business, type of business you run, the products you are selling, and who your target market is. We know it can be difficult to sort through the e-commerce options available, so here are some e-commerce platforms and things to consider about each one:
Shopify – Shopify is a very user-friendly e-commerce platform, which makes it convenient for new small businesses on a budget. With Shopify, it is very easy to build a professional-looking website and e-commerce shop. Shopify can tend to be more expensive than many e-commerce platforms, however. Additionally, users are also very limited in their options for making customizations, and if and when the time comes to switch platforms, Shopify doesn’t make it easy.
WooCommerce – WooCommerce is a free e-commerce solution available for those whose websites are built with WordPress. While WooCommerce can be a bit more of a learning curve than Shopify, it is still very user friendly and offers flexibility for its users. It certainly requires a bit more know-how than Shopify, but it also offers many more options. In addition, WooCommerce does not involve any monthly fees, so it a very cost-effective e-commerce solution for small businesses.
Paid E-Commerce Shopping Carts – An example of this solution would be BigCommerce. While this type of solution can be more expensive, it can eliminate the headache of having to worry about security. The paid shopping cart services take care of security for you. For beginners, these shopping cart services can often be overwhelming with all of their options, making them a bit more difficult to use as well.
There are a number of other shopping cart options we haven’t covered here, but these are the main types of e-commerce options. Check out the video below for more options.
